Common Scams

High Risk
Arlanda Airport (ARN), T-Centralen

Taxi Overcharging/Fraud

The most infamous scam in Stockholm. Due to deregulation, unscrupulous drivers charge exorbitant fares (5-10x normal rates) at the airport and train stations. Technically legal if displayed on the price sticker.

How to Avoid

NEVER take a taxi without pre-booking. Use Taxi Stockholm, Taxi Kurir, Uber, or Bolt. Check the yellow-and-black price sticker before entering. Airport to city should cost 500-700 SEK.

Medium Risk
T-Centralen, Gamla Stan, Drottninggatan, crowded public transport

Pickpocketing

Thieves work in teams in crowded areas. One distracts while another steals from bags or pockets.

How to Avoid

Keep valuables in zippered inner pockets. Wear bags across your body in front. Be alert when boarding/exiting subway.

Medium Risk
Gamla Stan, tourist-heavy bars and cafes

Restaurant/Bar Overcharging

Restaurants omit prices for specials and charge inflated amounts. The Bar Friends scam involves friendly locals encouraging you to drink, then presenting an astronomical bill.

How to Avoid

Always check menu prices before ordering. Be wary of overly friendly strangers in bars.

High Risk
Targeting tourists via phone after hotel check-in

Fraudulent Calls/Fake Police

Scammers call claiming to be police, banks, or embassies, stating there's an issue with your account and requesting money transfers or bank details.

How to Avoid

Hang up immediately. Swedish police and banks never call asking for bank details or money transfers. Verify by calling official numbers.

Medium Risk
Outside Royal Palace, Vasa Museum

Staged Distractions (Spill/Bird Droppings)

A scammer spills liquid or smears substance on you. A helper rushes to clean the mess while pickpocketing your valuables.

How to Avoid

Immediately secure your bag and walk away. Don't let anyone touch you or your belongings.
