The Scooter/Motorbike Damage Scam
You rent a scooter in Bali, Thailand, or Vietnam. When you return it, the owner claims you caused damage that was already there before you rented it. They demand $50–$500 for repairs. In some cases, the owner has a key to the scooter and moves it while you are parked, causing damage themselves. They may hold your passport as 'security'.
💸 Typical amount lost: $50–$500
Red Flags
- Owner asks to hold your passport as a deposit
- No written rental agreement
- Owner does not walk around the scooter with you before rental
- Damage is claimed that was not on the pre-rental inspection
What To Say & Do
Before renting: photograph and video every scratch, dent, and mark on the scooter. Do this with the owner present. Never hand over your passport — offer a copy or a cash deposit instead. Get a written rental agreement. Use a lock on the scooter when parked.
