Taxi Overcharging
How It Works
Unlicensed taxis ('pirata taxis') at airports and tourist zones charge 3–10x the standard rate. A ride from NAICM airport to the historic center should cost 200–350 MXN via authorized taxi; pirata drivers quote 800–1,500 MXN. More dangerously, pirata taxis have been linked to express kidnappings.
💸 Typical amount lost: 400–1,200 MXN ($20–$60 USD) overcharge per ride
Red Flags
- Driver approaches you inside the terminal
- No official taxi authorization sticker on the windshield
- Refuses to use a taximeter
- Quotes price in USD rather than MXN
Phrases Scammers Use
- ""Taxi, taxi? I take you to city, 50 dollars""
- ""Official taxi queue very long, I take you now, same price""
What To Say & Do
Use only authorized taxis from the official SITEUR or TAXIMEX booths inside the terminal, or book an Uber/DiDi from the app before exiting. Say: "No gracias, I have a booking."
